Workshop Theme: THE THINGS WE CARRY: The Gifts and The Wounds

not everything that is faced can be changed,

but nothing can be changed until it is faced.

~james baldwin

sometimes we do not get a choice in what we carry; we carry wounds and wonder, mishaps and mysteries, scars and scholars, grief and grace, burdens and beauty. as people relegated to the margins of society, the weight can be even more oppressive.

some of the baggage that weighs us down and gifts that buoy our souls:

the cloak of inferiority

the songs of our great great great grandmothers

a lost continent in our bodies

the prayers of our great great great grandfathers

a distorted image of beauty regarding our features, skin color and hair texture

rhythm knitted into the fabric of our dna

the middle passage

the quiet brilliance of resistance and resilience

high blood pressure/hypertension black eyed peas, collard greens, catfish and corn bread

the criminal (in)justice system

ingenuity and creativity

using the soul motion dance practice, we will move together to make space in our bodies to release the wounds that are no longer in service and receive the wonders that enhance our growth and well-being. we will remember that to show and share our scars and our gifts is a blessing to ourselves and to the world.

We look forward to moving with you.
